My name is Jiaxin Zhou. I attend Stony Brook University. My major is Mathematics Teachers Education. My part time job is to be a floater/assistant teacher at a daycare center. In high school I was Vice President of the National Honor Society. This means we have to do community service hours and volunteer tutoring hours. In total I had 175+ hours in volunteering and about half of them was in tutoring. I was also Vice President of the Mathletes club and a member of my high schools' research team. In Mathletes we took the American Mathematics (AMC) exam every year. One year I won second place in my class for AMC 11/12 when I was a junior. Then for research I did Computer Science research at NYU Tandon under the supervision of my mentors. I am very passionate about mathematics and my best qualities in teaching is patience, caring, and understanding. I have taught math to my younger brother, cousins and niece math when they was the age 1-2 and up. I always taught them young. I love math and I feel the more younger you are the better chances you are to like it if who is teaching makes it fun. Math is super important since we use it in our day-to-day life. I love that the kids are encouraged to learn and even if they aren't once they see I am teaching them but making it fun in a way they would still understand it is what I do. I have always had a passion for math ever since I was in grade school. During those years I would travel to varies cities competeing in Challenge 24 tournements. I still love plying the game today. My first job working with the Department of Education was as a math teacher/tutor, helping scholars with the homework and test prep.

Since I was little, I always enjoyed learning how to understand arithmetic. During my high school years, I excelled through Algebra I, Algebra II, and Precalculus. I am confident in my abilities to tutor others through elementary math. While at college I have taken College Math which specifically prioritizes the student’s ability to re-teach what he had learned in that course as well as an in-depth review of fourth grade math up to Algebra I. I do this by creating individualized plans that steadily increase the difficulty of the topic until mastery is achieved before moving onto the next topic. I am currently teaching 3rd grade and have noticed that there are some gaps and learning barriers in some school curriculum. My goal as an educator is to bridge that gap between the innate learning process and the processes that are taught in schools. I am here to help learners identify techniques that they can also share with their parents to improve math skills and knowledge. Today, elementary math consists of various strategies and the goal is for students to determine what strategies work best for them. As a student, sometimes it is difficult to grasp that concept as most subjects require you to use consistent formulas to discover answers. In helping students identify concepts they can strengthen their knowledge in and strategies that work best for them, together we can improve grades as well as mathematic independence.
